Google Assistant Can Now Control Even More Smart Home Devices

May 3, 2017

Google Assistant is catching up to Amazon’s Alexa by adding support for your iHome, Leviton, emberlight, and Artik Cloud Legrand devices.

Google Home just got more powerful

Google Home just got more powerful

Google launched it’s Home “voice assistant in a speaker” last fall, and with it came the Google Assistant. The Google Home is a direct competitor to the Amazon Echo, which created this new market in 2014, and is designed to help you answer your questions as well as complete some simple actions. A big part of the Echo’s appeal has been to people with smart home accessories, as the Echo is able to integrate with just about every smart device you can think of. Meanwhile Google has been trailing in this area since it was released the Google Assistant.

And while the Google Home/Assistant has still not caught up to Amazon’s Echo, it did just gain some ground by adding support for more smart lights and smart plugs from iHome (smart plugs only), Leviton, emberlight, and Samsung’s Artik Cloud Legrand devices. iHome is the biggest addition to the list, but every new those other brands are nothing to sneeze at either.

With Apple reportedly more than likely to introduce a home speaker with Siri built in, there is little reason to think this market is going to get any less competitive. It’s exciting to see Google and Amazon fighting it out in this space, and we love seeing moves like this that make these devices even more powerful.

If you are looking to buy a Google Home to take advantage of these new features, now is a good time to buy one, with the Google Home on sale for $114 at most retailers.

Hat tip to Android Police for originally noticing the updated support pages.
