The new Alexa-powered Roomba from iRobot is here, and it’s their cheapest Wi-Fi Roomba yet.
"Alexa, ask Roomba to start cleaning"
The new Roomba 690
iRobot has been making Roomba vacuum cleaners for years at this point, and today they announced the Roomba 690, their newest Wi-Fi connected vacuum. This is not the first Wi-Fi connected Roomba that iRobot has released, but it is the first with support for smart speakers, specifically the Amazon Echo in this case. Additionally, coming in at $374.99 it’s also the most affordable of the company’s Wi-Fi Roombas.
The Wi-Fi functionality enables you to tell the Roomba to start cleaning from your smartphone with iRobot’s HOME app (iOS/Android). This is very convenient, and considering the other Wi-Fi Roombas sell for $600-800, this $349 model brings that functionality in reach of a lot more buyers.
But the most exciting addition is Amazon Alexa support, which will allow owners who have an Alexa-powered device to control their Roomba 690 with just their voice. iRobot has released a new Alexa Skill that any Echo owner can activate on their account, and speak basic commands to their Rommba. Here are some examples:
- “Alexa, ask Roomba to start cleaning”
- “Alexa, ask Roomba to stop cleaning”
- “Alexa, ask Roomba to dock”
- “Alexa, ask Roomba what it is doing?”
- “Alexa, ask Roomba where it is?”
The Roomba 690 is currently on sale and in stock at iRobot’s website.
