Nest has a brand new security camera, taking place alongside the Nest Cam and Nest Cam Outdoor. The new camera is called the Nest Cam IQ and it’s a camera made for indoor and outdoor use but has smarter built-in features that take advantage of the companies new 4K sensor.
The Nest Cam IQ has a 4K sensor but it’s not used the way you might think. Instead of always recording 4K footage, the Cam IQ generally records in 1080P but uses its 4K capabilities in situations when it detects something unusual happening, such as a stranger entering your home.
If something like that happens, the Nest Cam IQ will identify that there’s a person and will then trigger an alert that includes a captured zoomed-in photo. There’s also a feature called “supersight” that gives you a picture-in-picture look of any people in the frame but zoomed in when you’re looking at the app live.
Basically, what the camera is doing is performing an enhance feature that you’ve seen in popular shows and movies. And that’s why the 4K sensor is needed.
The Nest Cam IQ also gets other hardware upgrades, including improved infrared LED emitters, which are now invisible at night instead of glowing red. The camera also has built-in speakers that are 7x more powerful than the original Nest Cam. There’s also three microphones on board to offer up better background noise suppression.
Other features include a new multicolor LED so that you know exactly when the Nest Cam IQ is active as well as a new weighted base that makes it easy to adjust.
You can pre-order the Nest Cam IQ starting today and it will cost $299, which is $100 more than the Nest Cam and the Nest Cam Outdoor. If you’re willing to buy two, you can pick them up for $499, which is $99 cheaper than buying two separately. You can expect them to ship June 28, according to Amazon.
