The Amazon Echo is great for a lot of things, and can be a powerful tool in getting things done in your life, but the number one skill I use on the Echo is not what anyone would call “productive.” No, the top skill I use is Jeopardy, which is exactly what it sounds like, and it’s awesome! If you or someone in your home is a Jeopardy fiend, this game is going to be your new addiction.
"Alexa, play Jeopardy!"
Enabling the Jeopardy Skill
We haven’t gone over enabling a skill from the Alexa app, so let’s do that first.
Go to the Skills page
If you have not already, install the Alexa app from the App Store (or Google Play Store for Android). Once the app is installed and you have signed into the app with your Amazon account, you’re going to want to tap into the “hamburger menu” at the top left of the screen. This brings up the app’s menu, where you can do a lot of things, but we’re currently concerned with the “Skills” button. Tap into Skills.
Alexa Skills page, and installing Jeopardy
The Skills page is essentially just the Amazon website displayed in the Alexa app. You can also visit this page in any web browser. No matter how you go to the Skills page, all you have to do is track down the Jeopardy skill. You can either search for it with the search box at the top of the page, or you can scroll down and look under “Customer favorites this week” where it is almost always right at the top of that list.
From here all you have to do is tap the blue Enable button and the skill will be loaded onto your account. Done!
The magic of this skill is that it plays almost exactly like the real game. You get 6 questions every weekday, and each day’s questions are added right after the show airs. The 6 questions are taken from categories from that day’s show, but they are not the same questions asked. Think of it as playing the questions that didn’t quite make the show.
To start playing, just say “Alexa, play Jeopardy” and the game begins. Alexa will tell you the category for each question, and then give you the clue. Just like real Jeopardy, you must answer in the form of a question, so “what is…” or “who is…” It’s great fun, and is seriously something I look forward to using every day after I get home from work.
